July

Early July in the Garden:

  1. Weed, weed, weed: Go row by row and make sure to pull all of the emerging weeds around your established plants- the best time to weed is right after watering

  2. Check for signs of pest damage. And preventatively treat your tomatoes, cucumbers, tomatillos and beans with neem oil and your brassicas and squash with Bt spray.

  3. Prune your tomatoes: make sure to trim any leaves that are yellow or brown or are touching the ground. Secure tomato branches to the cage or stakes.

  4. Prune your herbs regularly to promote new growth

  5. Harvest lettuce and arugula- if your lettuce is sending up a large center leaf or flower it is done and it is time to pull and reseed

  6. Prune and stake train your zucchini

  7. Reseed lettuces

  8. Remove any brown or yellow leaves from plants

  9. Continue to trellis train your cucumbers

  10. Pick your peas and remove vines once you notice the plant has stopped blooming and is beginning to yellow.

  11. Water regularly in the morning hours. Summer plants like a thorough watering around the base of the stem.
